About Gotham

Gotham was the Fox television series running from 2014 to 2019 that traced Detective Jim Gordon's early years in Gotham City alongside a young Bruce Wayne. The show's title wordmark draws on a stately serif to signal the prestige-drama register Fox was aiming for — letterforms with the gravitas of a 19th-century newspaper masthead applied to a modern crime-drama identity.

Across its five seasons the show built an aesthetic that drew equally from noir cinema, comic-book chiaroscuro, and broadsheet design. The masthead-style title card placed it alongside the Fox network's other prestige drama branding of the era — visually serious, deliberately anti-flashy, built to signal "this is a show that takes its source material seriously" before a single scene plays.

What font does Gotham use?

Gotham uses Arno Pro Regular, designed by Robert Slimbach for Adobe (2007). A commercial Venetian Old Style serif, popular in editorial design.

On this page, Lipi offers a generated lookalike of the font used in Gotham — ready to download instantly with a commercial license, no third-party purchase required.

Where this style works

Venetian serif text faces like this excel at long-form editorial work: magazine bodies, book interiors, newspaper feature design, foundation annual reports, museum and gallery wall text, and prestige-drama broadcast graphics. The calligraphic underpinnings produce a comfortable reading rhythm at small sizes that newer geometric serifs often lack, while the display companions handle the masthead-scale work.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Gotham TV show font free?

No. The wordmark uses Arno Pro Regular, a commercial Adobe typeface available via Adobe Fonts subscription. The Lipi lookalike on this page is sold under a single $7.99 commercial license — no Adobe subscription required.

What fonts are similar to the Gotham TV font?

Comparable Venetian Old Style text faces include Adobe Jenson Pro, Centaur, Brioso Pro, Cala, and Sabon Next. EB Garamond (Google Fonts) is a solid free near-substitute.

Note: this is the Gotham TV show font, not the geometric Gotham typeface — what's the difference?

Two completely separate things. The Gotham TV show wordmark uses a Venetian Old Style serif (Arno Pro). The other Gotham — the popular geometric sans designed by Tobias Frere-Jones at Hoefler & Co. — is what designers usually mean by "the Gotham font" (Obama 2008, plenty of brand identities). Different typefaces, same name; the font on this page is the serif used by the Fox TV show.
