About Death Note

Death Note is a manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata, serialised in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2003 to 2006 and adapted into a 37-episode anime in 2006. Its premise — a student finds a notebook that kills anyone whose name is written in it — drives a psychological duel between Light Yagami and the detective L that has kept the series in print for two decades.

The logo matches the material at the centre of the story. The lettering is thin and spidery, drawn with visible hand-inked irregularity, tall condensed proportions and sharply pointed apexes — it reads as something scratched into a notebook rather than typeset. A distinctive quirk carries through the set: small ink dots sitting inside the closed counters of letters like D, O and R, a detail that survives across every regional edition.

What font does Death Note use?

Death Note uses The Death Note logo is custom hand-drawn lettering created for the manga, not a licensed typeface. Recreations circulate under the name Death Note, all approximating the original spidery ink drawing.

Where this style works

Thin hand-inked display lettering suits anything gothic, occult or unsettling: horror and thriller titles, dark-fantasy book covers, metal and darkwave album art, tattoo and occult-adjacent branding, Halloween graphics, and editorial work that wants an unsteady, handwritten menace. The irregularity is the point — regularise the strokes and it stops being frightening.
